Reflective Writing

What is reflective writing?

Anything which comes to mind which may bring meaning and understanding to the self and relationships. It may be an experience you choose to write about or a poem; it could be anything. But, through the process of writing it down, there is opportunity to freely associate with your unconscious thoughts which may bring about new knowledge about your feelings and how you are feeling about past or present experiences and relationships with yourself or others.

How do I do it?

A notebook, a pen, a laptop, PC or typewriter; whichever works best for you. All you need is safe space, without distractions, to temporarily suspend what’s going on in the external world and focus on what’s going on inside you, your internal thoughts, your internal world.

Where do I do it?

Wherever you feel is best for you to focus on you, your feelings and your thoughts. Indoors, outdoors, wherever feels safe, secure and allows you to feel relaxed.

What are the benefits?

On a basic level, reflective writing is an outlet for thoughts and feelings, which can feel freeing. On a deeper level, it is an opportunity to process painful past experiences, identify feelings, behaviours and communications, and reflect on our interactions with the self and others. Practised carefully, it is an opportunity to find and speak to the self.*

* NB: Although many forms of writing can have a therapeutic effect, what I offer is NOT therapeutic writing, counselling, or psychotherapy. If any of our work together brings about feelings, thoughts or fears which may require further support, I will direct you to appropriate services. Please see my terms and conditions page for further information.
